AUTHOR'S GUIDELINES

The Journal of Ship Technology invites contributions on all aspects of ship technology from scientists, academicians, technologists, practicing engineers, administrators and all others involved directly or indirectly with shipbuilding or marine industry. The papers shall be peer-reviewed by recognized and leading experts in the field of the paper’s subject.

Author Benefits
There are no charges levied from authors for any publication in the Journal of Ship Technology. The journal is published twice a year, in January and July. The waiting period for publication, from submission to printing, can be as short as two months, in case of papers which follow all guidelines and meet the relevant standards. All contributors will receive a copy of the journal each, and if they wish, a PDF version of their published paper.

Contributions will be considered for publication in the Journal of Ship Technology under the following categories:

Technical Papers

The JST invites original technical papers pertaining to a wide variety of topics related to ship technology, including ship design, ship construction, ship maintenance, ship repair, ship operation, ship regulation, ship structures, ship hydrodynamics, ship dynamics, ship aerodynamics, ship stability, ship manoeuvring, ship propulsion, ship machinery, ship systems, ship controls, ship decommissioning, ship breaking, ship recycling, ship economy & law, ship-aircraft interface, marine survey, marine engineering, marine IT & electronics, marine design, automation & control, propulsion systems, power generation & distribution, system integration, warship technology, naval engineering, submarine technology, underwater technology, shock & impact, noise & vibration, salvage operation, simulation technology, marine corrosion, marine coatings, materials for marine vehicles, ballast water handling, shipping infrastructure, offshore technologies, port & harbour management, coastal engineering, harbour engineering, dredging, hydrography, inland waterways, boat building & repair, small crafts, ocean environment, oceanography, ocean technology, wave hydrodynamics, marine pollution, marine security, human factors & training, and social impact of ship technology.

Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be typed in double spacing on one side of A4 size paper with wide margins. The entire text may be formatted as single column and the manuscript need not resemble the published format of the journal, since the typesetting process will remove most formatting in any case. All pages should be numbered consecutively. Technical papers are generally not to exceed 20 typescript pages (in double spacing). All manuscripts are to be submitted in MS Word format. PDF version of the manuscript may be submitted in addition to the MS Word version.

Style
It is important that the manuscript should be organized in the following order:
Title;
      •   Authors and each of their affiliations (organisations), including e-mail;
      •   Abstract (not exceeding 200 words);
      •   Keywords;
      •   Main body of paper (divided into numbered sections and sub-sections);
      •   Conclusions;
      •   Acknowledgement (if applicable);
      •   References;
      •   Author biography (50-150 words for each author).
Please check that all the above items are included in your manuscript.

The sections of the main body are to be numbered with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3 etc.) and the sub-sections (if any) are to be numbered as “1.2, 1.2, 1.3”, etc. Paragraphs are not to be numbered.

Illustrations, Figures and Tables
Photographs, charts and diagrams are to be referred to as ‘figure(s)’ and should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the main text of the paper. Figures are to be numbered with Arabic numerals (“Figure 1, Figure 2”, etc.), followed by a brief caption (mandatory). Tables are also to be numbered (“Table 1, Table 2” etc.), with the heading appearing at the top of each table.  All figures and tables must be referred in the main body of the paper. Figures should be submitted separately in electronic form, in addition to being embedded in the main text to indicate location. Each figure should be submitted separately either as high-resolution TIFF or JPEG files (for photographs), or as individual files in the format in which they were originally created (such as .xls, .dwg, .psd, etc.).

Mathematical Expressions
All mathematical symbols and formula appearing in the paper should be typed (either in MS Word itself or embedded using tools like MathType). The expressions should not be pictorial images. Particular care should be exercised in identifying all symbols wherever they are first used in the paper. In case of papers using a large number of symbols, these should be listed in the Nomenclature to be provided at the beginning of the main body of the paper. All formulae should be consecutively numbered using Arabic numerals (not subdivided into sections). All terms and abbreviations should be defined at first usage. Please be clear as to subscripts, superscripts and exponents.

References
All references listed at the end of the paper should be referred in the main body of the text. List references by lead author at the end of the paper in the order of their reference in the paper (not alphabetically). References in the text should be cited by the last name of the lead author and the reference listing in square brackets as shown below:
            It was shown by Reddy [15] that the velocity increases over the body.
            It has been shown that the velocity increases over the body [15].

Sample format for listing references (books, journals, conference proceedings and websites) are as follows:

Organisational Clearance
Authors are personally and solely responsible for obtaining the necessary organisational clearance for their paper before submitting it to the journal editor for publication.

Copyright and Originality
Technical papers submitted for publication must be original, unpublished material. It is the responsibility of the author(s) to certify that their paper has not appeared in any form in another publication. If the document is an update of a paper or presentation published elsewhere, then the author(s) must submit a detailed accounting as to the differences found in the final paper, which would make the accepted paper an original document. In exceptional cases, the journal may agree to publish a paper that has been presented in a conference earlier, but only with the specific approval of the copyright holder(s). All authors must sign the “transfer of copyright” agreement before the article can be published.

Submission
Authors are requested to submit electronic versions of their contributions. Two hard copies should also be sent by post. The address for submission is:

Technical Notes

Technical notes may consist of brief writings, of not more than 10 typescript pages, on any of the topics relevant to the journal. These will not be peer-reviewed and may consist of reports on ongoing work, literature reviews, case studies, and other topics that may not merit a full-length technical paper.

All the above guidelines for technical papers may be referred for style, formatting, organizational clearance and other aspects.

Discussions

Comments are invited (up to 500 words) on any paper that has appeared in past issues of the journal. The respective author’s response will be sought and the comment as well as the author’s reply will be published at the earliest opportunity. Comment can be sent by e-mail to editor@jstindia.org. Please include your name and organisational address. No specific format is necessary, although please note that it is your responsibility to obtain any relevant organisational clearance.

Book reviews

Reviews of books relevant to any of the subject fields of the journal are sought. These may be up to 3 typescript pages and may include pictures (with or without captions). Please include the basic details of the book, namely: title, author, publisher, price, pages, year of publication and ISBN serial. The name and organisation of the reviewer will be mentioned in the journal. It is the reviewer’s responsibility to obtain prior organisational clearance where necessary.

Back cover design

The back cover of the journal provides a good medium to showcase India’s strengths, capabilities and achievements in the field of ship technology to a well-targeted readership. Suggestions, ideas and material for the back cover of the journal are invited and suitable credits will be printed in the journal.
